University of Tripoli

Libya’s first university was founded by royal decree on December 15, 1955, under the name “University of Libya.” Initially, it included the Colleges of Arts and Education in Benghazi. In 1957, the Faculty of Science was established in Tripoli, laying the groundwork for what would later become the University of Tripoli. The Faculty of Agriculture was added in 1966. Before this, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) had founded the Higher Technical Studies Faculty, which was subsequently annexed to the University of Libya in 1967 as the Faculty of Engineering.

In 1973, the University of Libya divided into two separate institutions: the University of Benghazi and the University of Tripoli. The University of Tripoli was renamed Al-Fateh University in 1976. In 2009, the medical colleges were split off to form the “Al-Fateh University for Medical Sciences.” However, this separation lasted only one year; in 2010, the medical colleges were re-integrated into Al-Fateh University. The institution regained its original name, the University of Tripoli, in 2012. Over the years, additional faculties have been added, reaching a total of 20 colleges.
